About Us

About Our Spa

The Foot & Hand Spa is Richmond’s only medical spa that focuses solely on the feet and hands.

Medical spas, or medi-spas, offer traditional spa services. You’ll notice a big difference, however, in the environment. Dr. Mitchell Waskin, a Board Certified podiatrist in the Foot & Ankle Center, is the Medical Director and is onsite. He works with our professionally trained nail technicians and will oversee your care, particularly if you have foot problems or other health issues that affect your feet.

The Foot & Hand Spa offers a holistic and aesthetic approach to good foot health. We use only medical-grade skin care products and EPA-registered hospital disinfectants. Our sanitation procedures meet or exceed OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards for maintaining a clean environment and preventing the spread of germs and disease. In fact, our instruments are sterilized using the same techniques a hospital uses to sterilize surgical instruments.

The Foot & Ankle Center offers spa services in a clean, comfortable setting. We are inside of the Foot & Ankle Center, conveniently located on the medical campus of Johnston-Willis hospital.

Our spa pedicure chairs support up to 350 pounds; please let us know when you book your appointment if you require alternative seating, and we will be happy to accommodate you.

About Our Medical Director

Dr. Mitchell Waskin

As a podiatrist, Dr. Waskin has treated people with all types of foot problems, including those caused by poor sanitation practices in local spas. He realized that they put some of his patients, particularly diabetics, at serious risk. Dr. Waskin visited many other spas to see firsthand how they cleaned their equipment. He was not impressed.

Dr. Waskin decided to open a medical-grade spa to provide pedicures & manicures in a safe and comfortable environment. The Foot and Hand Spa is located on the campus of Johnston-Willis hospital within The Foot & Ankle Center so that Dr. Waskin can personally oversee the care of the spa’s clients.

He earned his podiatric medical degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, which recognized him for outstanding achievement, and then completed his residency in foot and ankle surgery at Metropolitan Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Waskin continued his post-graduate training in Laser Surgery, Foot & Ankle Arthroscopy, Rigid Internal Fixation and Cryosurgery.

Dr. Waskin is certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons. He is also a published author and speaker, and has served leadership roles in several professional medical organizations. Dr. Waskin is one of only 25 podiatrists in the nation who provides full-service medical spa services specializing in the hands & feet.

About Our Pedicurists

Doris Horne, pedicurist

Doris Horne, aka The Foot Lady, really loves feet. In fact, she collects them. Doris’ collection of wood, plastics, glass, ceramic and jewelry feet is 400 strong and growing! So, when she gives you a medical pedicure at the Foot and Hand Spa, you know your feet are in good hands. In addition to making feet look great, Doris, a 21-year veteran nail technician, identifies and assesses potential foot-related problems so she can refer patients for further care when needed. In addition to medical pedicures, Doris provides other spa services and extended deep massage, and specializes in personal designs and original artwork. She is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Tiffany, licensed nail technician

Tiffany has a lot to offer her clients when it comes to expert nail care. She has a cosmetology license as well as a cosmetology instructor license. For Tiffany, continuous professional development is a way of life. Besides being a licensed nail technician, Tiffany is also certified in reflexology, and has completed additional training to earn an advanced nail certification.

Karen, licensed nail technician

Karen discovered her interest in nail care while, as a caregiver, she started doing her mother's nails. She decided to pursue her interest by taking a 150-hour class to pass the state boards and earn her Virginia state license. After an 11-year career at the nail spa of the Country Club of Virginia, Karen joined the staff of The Foot & Hand Spa. She looks forward to providing expert nail care to diabetics and others requiring specialized care — as well as to anyone concerned about germs and infection and looking for a clean place to get a manicure and pedicure.
